Despite frustrating
performances in the first half of the season, Jimmies turned a corner at
Christmas and started to pick up their game. Beating March away started
the ball rolling then two outstanding defensive performances against
Westwood and Kempston (2nd and 3rd respectively)
kept up the form. A poor day out at Vipers saw Jimmies go down 26-0 but
that didn’t hinder the mood as they then hammered Thorney (50-5) and
swept aside Deepings (33-14) in consecutive weeks at home. Up next was a trip
over to Saffron Lane to face rivals Aylestonians, both teams played mainly
a 1st XV but a few second string players as well. ASJ came
flying out of the blocks and were about 40 points ahead by half-time, the
game finished 65-26 and Jimmies had dished out their heaviest defeat of
the season. Northampton Heathens
had visited Covert Lane on a coach trip at the beginning of December and
after a real good booze up with the home side, left about 9pm looking a
bit wobbly. Everyone was looking forward to returning the favour. But
first the hob at hand, Jimmies started slowly making hard work of what
should have been an easy game, going into the break just 10-0 up. Then
came the onslaught, as the guests ran in five unanswered tries and
converted three. Credit though to Heathens, who were brilliant hosts, the
trip home was good fun too, and the back seat is now proudly owned by
Tommy B, Sausage and Big Jay....for now! The last league game
of the year was at home to “the other Aylestone”, Athletic that is,
after losing at their place by three points in November. Jimmies were
looking for revenge. After storming into the lead the home side slackened
off and allowed in two late scores but managed to hold out for a 27-14
victory meaning finishing 5th above Athletic in 6th. Job
Done! Oh and finally, a week later, Jimmies hopped over the fence and dished out a 43-17 demolition of arch rivals Stoneygate to top off a great end to the season! SUMMARY
