Aylestone St James RFC ("The Jimmies") is situated in Scraptoft, on the north eastern boundary of Leicester. The clubhouse and three pitches lie in the countryside, but Aylestone St James has always considered itself to be a down to earth city club, (and there is easy access from Leicester’s transport systems).
The club was formed in 1901 and is very much one of the ‘elder statesmen’ of Leicestershire Rugby, renowned in the East Midlands for its hospitality and friendliness, and with its large open fire, which is always welcoming on a cold afternoon. Over the years the Jimmies have provided many Tigers and County players and Two England captains, Bob Stirling in 1956 and Brett Pruce Jnr who captained Englend Deaf against Wales in 2007. The club moved to its present site in 1962. We have experienced something of a resurgence in the last few years after a period of introspection when the club examined its standing and re-aligned its ambitions, embracing many RFU initiatives and accepting that change had to happen, however, we have never lost track of our primary intention, that rugby is fun. We have been promoted three times in consecutive seasons recently, 2005/6 to 2007/8, and we now play in Midlands 2 East (North) for the 2010/2011 season with high hopes for the season ahead; our first team is very young, average age is under 25. Our second team, a combination of youth and experience, gained promotion from their local league last season as well, and our third team and Vets enjoy themselves within a competitive framework. Our girls teams have also had a great deal of success with nine Jimmies Angels getting regional honours, and one training with the England Squad. The club often hosts regional training sessions and we are now developing a ladies team; training takes place on Tuesdays from 7pm and Sundays from 12.30pm. Visit their website at www.jimmiesangels.co.uk to find out more. We have a thriving and successful junior section, with age group teams from under sevens to under 17’s and Colts, run with the help of parents and older players. Aylestone St James is recognised as being one of the most successful junior and youth clubs in the county as well as being a place where young people can enjoy themselves in safety. In the modern era Aylestone St James has adopted a business attitude to its future development, we expect exceptional things, both on and off the pitch, but we have never lost our commitment to recreational rugby or to our members enjoying themselves and playing or watching rugby with a smile. There is a saying within the club that probably holds true for the county –
"Once a Jimmie always a Jimmie" Training nights for seniors are Tuesdays and Thursdays, and of course the bar is always open...
